Verified by VISA & MasterCard SecureCode Explained

How 3D Secure Works

3D Secure offers an extra layer of protection for cardholders and merchants. You may be asked to enter an additional password after checkout completion to “verify” you as the cardholder.

Developed by Visa and licensed by MasterCard, 3D Secure stands for “Three Domain Secure” the domains being the acquiring bank (retailer’s bank), the issuing bank (the cardholder’s bank) and the infrastructure that supports the 3D Secure protocol.

After completing the checkout process, you will be asked to provide a password (if previously enrolled) or to set up your Verified By Visa or MasterCard SecureCode credentials. Authorization is done through your issuing bank.

Once you've registered and created your own private password, you will be automatically prompted by your card issuer to type in your security code each time you make a purchase at participating online stores/retailers. Then your security code will be quickly confirmed by your card issuer to complete your purchase. Your security code will never be shared with the store/retailer and using it is as easy as entering your PIN at an ATM.

How will this affect your checkout process?

In a 3D Secure transaction, you must register for Verified by Visa (VbV) or MasterCard SecureCode (MSC) with your issuing bank if you have not already done so. When you place an order, you will be asked to register your card before continuing with the transaction. The transaction process is as follows:

  1. You will complete your order and add products to their shopping cart as usual.
  2. At the checkout stage, if you select to pay by Visa, Visa Delta and Visa Debit, Maestro or MasterCard, then you will be redirected to your issuing bank where you will need to enter your password.
  3. The bank will verify the password and the transaction will continue as normal.

How does 3D Secure protect you?

Correctly entering your security code during a purchase confirms that you are the authorised cardholder. If an incorrect security code is entered, the purchase will not be completed. Even if someone knows your credit or debit card number, the purchase cannot be completed without your security at a participating store/retailer.
